Modern wall-hung toilets. The fixings are concealed and toilet seats with ‘top’ fixing are required (part 2).

In the post: ”Wall-hung sanitary ware and their covers (part 1)” we started talking about wall-hung toilets. We saw that they began to spread in bathroom environments from the 1980s and especially the 1990s. A few previous attempts had been made by the same company (one series among all SOVAS by Ideal Standard),

but, perhaps, the technical prerequisites were lacking (the installation structures – called combifix – for the wall-hung WCs that we have today had not yet been produced by the various companies: Geberit, Valsir, kariba…) and the plumbers’ work was cumbers’ cumbersome and difficult, and above all very expensive, so we had to wait for this combination of factors to make this type of sanitary ware an element that we now consider normal in bathrooms. In the post just mentioned we started with the ceramic series that made these sanitary ware popular: it was ALA by Ideal Standard. Apart from the impressive sales figures of these sanitary wares, it was the first ceramic series presented only in the wall-hung version by a ceramic company. Today it is normal to see at the presentation of a new ceramic series by a company that the versions of WCs and bidets are proposed both floor-standing and wall-hung, forty years ago presenting only the wall-hung version was a small revolution (which was clearly made by Ideal Standard which in those years dominated the market both in sales and style). From that period we also want to remember bestselling sanitary ware and toilet seats such as: GARDA by Dolomite, GEMMA by Scala, IDEA by Pozzi Ginori and SINTESI Wall-hung by Cesame.

What did all these wall-hung sanitary ware have in common? Why are the series we call modern different and how? Let’s start with the picture next door or the one in the previous paragraph (we have put a bidet but it clearly applies to the toilet as well). The sanitary ware is clearly wall-hung (at that time the discriminating factor on modernity in the bathroom was only floor-standing and wall-hung), but as you will notice when you look at the picture, on the sides you can see the bolts for anchoring it to the wall (see photo), admittedly hidden by two white or chrome plastic caps, which looking at them today, used to modern ceramic series, are a bit puzzling. Until about fifteen years ago, all sanitary ware was anchored to the wall with this system. Even the formally more refined series had openings on the sides that were used to tighten these nuts (later covered by caps), which were not only unsightly but also unhygienic and difficult to clean.

How could you solve the problem of tightening a datum if you could not reach it with a collet? Fortunately, to the aid of the ceramic companies came the new clamping kit from below (initially angering many plumbing friends who much preferred the old nut on bar accessible from the side. Even they, however, now that they have taken the measure of the new system realise that it is actually faster and even safer) and has enabled the advent of the new ceramic series that we will soon begin to look at. Basically, sanitary ware has evolved in aesthetics thanks to the genius of some engineer who is not even the least bit concerned with form but aims straight at practicality. This move to fully enclosed sanitary fixtures on the sides leads to toilet seats being in a position to be fitted from above, as in flush-to-wall sanitary fixtures. We have seen in the post: ”Toilet seat covers with expansion fixing from above. Dowel or anchor (lozenge)?” the two toilet seat fixing systems: 1-Fixing toilet seat cover with expansion system (dowel) and 2-Fixing toilet seat cover with anchor system (lozenge).

LINK series by Ceramica Flaminia

Let us clearly start with the iconic series of modern wall-hung sanitary ware: Link by Flaminia. As Ala was rightly presented only in the suspended series (it was recently supplemented by the floor-standing version called LINK back to wall). We have already met it in the post dedicated to the Flaminia company: ”The FLAMINIA design series. Not just WCs and bidets, but LINK, SPIN, TERRA…. and their original toilet seats.” and we described it this way: ‘They are the series of sanitary ware that brought Flaminia and the bathroom world into modern design and style. We also talked about them in the post on wall-hung sanitary ware:Wall-hung sanitary ware and their covers (part 1)which we quote in part: ‘In the late 90s early 2000s, suspended sanitary ware began to be considered a ‘normal’ choice. The time was right for a formal acceleration. The market was accustomed to shapes that were all the same and quite crude. Until then, the mere fact that a sanitary ware was suspended was enough to qualify it as modern. Flaminia understood the need for new shapes and styles and presented Link. And it was a masterpiece! They are still among the most beautiful wall-hung sanitary ware in the bathroom furnishing world. The incredibly low body height of only 20 cm (excluding the siphon) really gives the idea of a body suspended above the void. Minimal, chic, very modern even now more than twenty years after their introduction. The toilet seat covers for these sanitary fixtures are available in all its variants (original wrap-around, original wrap-around soft-close, in polyester-coated wood and the various dedicated versions) at the following link clik here ].

EASY.02 Wall-Hung series by Pozzi Ginori

One of Pozzi Ginori’s relaunch series. Together with the other series designed by CITTERIO500Q3900EGG che abbiamo visto nel post: ”Pozzi Ginori sanitaryware: the series of the modern era and their covers. (part 1)” allowed the company to return to the top of the bathroom furniture market. In the above-mentioned post we talked about the floor-standing WC, let’s resume the description that also applies to the wall-hung WC: “We quote an excerpt: “A form of sanitary ware (WCs and bidets) from which all ceramic companies competing with Pozzi-Ginori took their cue in the following years. The EASY.02 series (we could say for a change about the PG company) was year zero of flush-to-wall sanitary ware with soft oval shapes. It was such a precise design, studied down to the smallest detail, that a rounded toilet seat cover was also designed to look like a continuation of the ceramic element.” All toilet seat covers for this series are available in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik here ], also included, however, is a wooden version covered in white polyester for those looking for a seat that is perhaps less attractive than the round plastic original, but more practical as it is completely flat.

MUSE Wall-Hung series by Ceramica Catalano

Designed by Matteo Thun we discovered it in the ground version in the post: ”The unique (special) shapes of sanitary ware and their covers: Muse, Fiorile, Memory.” All of the above also clearly applies to the suspended series of this Catalano sanitary ware: ‘A series of sanitary ware proposed by Ceramica Catalano in the early 2000s. Looking at these sanitaryware you get the feeling of softness, they remind you of a white sheet animated by sea breezes. You get the feeling of something capable of embracing you without touching you. To create this shape, Catalano‘s master ceramists have combined history and production technology. The original Muse toilet seat cover is still available in the store clik here and a new PLUS extra-slim version with slow-motion hinges clik here

YA series by Eos Ceramica

One of the company’s latest series Eos Ceramica. Pure and essential geometric shapes. It is somewhat reminiscent of the Flaminia Link series but the dimensions are slightly different. Its thermoset WC cover with wrap-around lid and expansion fixing from above can be found in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik here ]

STARCK 2 series by Duravit

Designed by Philippe Starck we saw it in the post: ”Philippe Starck and the Duravit ceramic series. Original VS Dedicated toilet seats which one to choose?” and described it as follows: ‘From the round shape of the previous Starck 1 series to the D-shape of Starck 2. Perhaps less striking but still minimal and enhanced by the prominent L-shaped element at the back. The shapes are reduced and the list price also drops, so that it can be affordable for many. This is how the Duravit company website describes it: “A true Starck but with fewer pretensions: Starck 2, a ceramic series that represents the evolution and completion of its famous predecessor, the Starck 1 series. Starck 2 is also based on the origins of bathroom design: the shapes of the ceramics echo the movement with which water makes its path and allow us to see and experience the bathroom in a new way. The bathroom as a source. The sides of the Starck 2 sanitary fittings are completely closed: concealed fixings, unaltered perfection, easy to clean and a joy to the eyes of design lovers.” The WC covers for this Duravit series are available in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik here]

ALIA New series by Ceramica Globo

This series of sanitary by Ceramica Globo is the latest version of a historical series of the ceramic house, thus redesigned in a modern style, but with an antique/retro flavour. A very successful prgject. Strictly concealed fixings leave the ceramic body completely free of cracks and embellish the figure. The original thermoset toilet seat cover is available in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik here ]

FROZEN series by Simas

These Simas sanitary fittings are as mentioned in other posts (Rectangular/square sanitary ware and replacement toilet seat covers) the achievement of perfect form in ceramics. Beautiful in the floor-standing version, in the wall-hung version they achieve an incredible purity of style. Two parallelepipeds hanging on the wall of the best designer bathrooms. Think of the aesthetic difference if on the sides there were slots for screwing in the nuts as in the old ceramic series. The original toilet seat covers for this sanitary ware, both the first version in white coated wood and the version in wraparound thermoset (also available with slow motion hinges) can be found at the following link [ clik here ]
