Sanitaryware branded with the names of designers. Thun, Valeri, Balestra, Starck… Why can’t I find a toilet seat cover?

It happens that on some sanitary ware in some bathrooms, the sanitary ware manufacturers sometimes, instead of silk-screening the company logo (CatalanoAstraDuravit…) decide to put the name of the designer who designed the line. This creates a bit of confusion and often customers do not know how to find the toilet seat of sanitary ware purchased perhaps many years before. The first suggestion we give you is to use the guide to recognising the toilet seat (exclusive and efficient) as explained in the link: RECOGNITION OF TOILET SEAT by Sintesibagno. Today, however, we will look at some ceramic series designed and engineered by great masters of design.

Balestra design sanitaryware for Ceramica Catalano

A very successful rectangular series. Very particular was the slight border that delimited the upper part, it was called Esedra. Over time it was offered with various aesthetic decorations that customised its production. The production dates back to the ’80s. The toilet seat cover for this model can be found in the store at the following link [ clik here ]. Also designed by Balestra for Catalano is the Tissi series.

From the rectangular shape we move on to the softness of curves and circles. It was also possible to buy this series by choosing from various decors. This sanitary ware called Tissi by Catalano falls into the category of toilets with odd toilet seat spacings such as those seen in the post ”What is the wheelbase in toilet seats? (part 1)”. In fact, the holes for fixing the toilet seat are 21 cm from centre to centre. You can find the toilet seat cover for this sanitary fitting at the following link [ clik here ]

Sanitaryware design F. Valeri for Astra Ceramiche

With this series, he anticipated by several years the style and shape (big dimensions) that other competing ceramic manufacturers would later come up with. In the post: ”BIG sanitaryware, large WCs and bidets modern lines and their covers (part 2)” we have seen for example the ONDA by Ceramica Hidra, OMEGA by Facis and LAGO by Dolomite. It was a very large D-shape with a clean, essential line. Although it was very long, the toilet seat cover measured 48/49 cm with the hinges, to make the line of the toilet more slender it was only 35 cm wide. The toilet seat covers for these Astra sanitary ware in the official colours (white, champagne, blue and grey) can be found in the store at the following link [ clik here ]

Sanitaryware designed by Philippe Starck for Duravit

We have seen in the post: ”Philippe Starck and the Duravit ceramic series. Original VS Dedicated toilet seats which one to choose?” how the collaboration between this number one designer and the German sanitaryware company has been prolific and successful since back in 1994, when the STARCK 1. We take passages from the post to describe it: “A small stylistic revolution in the bathroom world. We have already talked about it in the post: “Sanitary round like a circle. Here you need customised toilet seats!” where we saw its round shape as a perfect circle, and in the post: ”Which sanitary fixtures and their toilet seats are the widest? From what size is a toilet seat non-standard? (part 1)” where we saw that it has a circular shape with a diameter of 42 cm (width). This was followed by the STARCK 2 and STARCK 3.

Sanitaryware design Matteo Thun Ceramica Catalano

The first collaboration between Thun and Catalano took place with the Roma series pictured here on the right. The year is 2005. A series of classic sanitary ware. Starting with a spherical shape in the upper part, we arrive at the lower part of the sanitary ware with a rectangular shape marked by a very particular step. The reference (also in the name) to the imperial style of the capital is very successful. It was a large toilet (39 cm) and certainly suitable for large bathrooms. Its original toilet seat is still available at the following link [ clik here ]

A couple of years later (year 2007) Thun designed for the company Muse. We have already talked about it in the post: ”The unique (special) shapes of sanitary ware and their covers: Muse, Fiorile, Memory”, we quote an entire passage from it to make it clear why Muse and her WC covers also represent the unique shapes category: “Today we will look at sanitaryware series that we consider unique shapes that are difficult to imitate. We have already seen in other posts, that often a ceramic manufacturer creates a shape and the others behind it imitate, change proportions and measurements and the series of sanitary ware is presented to the market. The series we see in this post could easily have been the forerunners of a style, but for a variety of reasons (practical craftsmanship/production difficulties (competitors cannot do certain processes), competition distracted in other projects,….) this did not happen and they remained unique. They have all become an integral part of bathroom furniture history and best sellers of the period in which they were produced. In addition to the Muse series by Catalano ceramics, this category includes the series Fiorile Ideal Standard  and series Memory Hidra Ceramiche.”. In our opinion Thun has created almost a sculpture and not a simple sanitary ware (the free-standing washbasin in the series is also incredible), looking at these sanitary ware you get the feeling of softness, they remind you of a white sheet animated by sea breezes. You get the feeling of something capable of embracing you without touching you. To create this shape, Catalano’s master ceramists have combined history and production technology. The original Muse toilet seat cover is still available in the store [ clik here ] and a new extra-slim PLUS version with slow-motion hinges [ clik here ]
